Old House Dahlias

Intrigued by the beauty and versatility of the dahlia, Mark Harvey started growing several varieties of this resilient flower in his backyard in Portland in 2003. Today, he offers more than 175 varieties of dahlias that Portlanders are accustomed to buying, literally, from his front doorstep.

Though he continues to grow flowers in his backyard, he also has a one-acre farm in Corbett, Oregon, just south of Portland and one acre in Portland's South Waterfront district. If you live in Portland, you can buy dahlias at 8005 SE Mill Street in the Montavilla neighborhood. Mark hosts an annual dahlia fest each September 10-11 and 17 -18. We also sell dahlia tubers for food , great raw on salads .

You can also pick up potted plants , and fresh cut flowers from August till frost at his self-serve cooler or call ahead for something special (call Mark first at 503-771-1199). Mark will be at Old House Dahlias August threw frost Saturday and Sunday . His South Water Front U-cut flower field will be open Fridays and Saturdays from 12:00- 5:00 August 28th till frost . This field is located in Portland next to the Meriwether Tower on S.W. River Park Way and Curry .

Feather Reed Grass

Want an easy to grow, tall grass that gives almost year around interest? Then you’ve got to try Feather Reed Grass. Calamagrostis acutiflora 'Karl Foerster' is a cool season clumping grass with a compact, erect growth habit. Airy pinkish flowers appear in Mid-May. The flowers mature to a bright wheat color and hold their form all season. Growing to 4-5 feet in height and 2 feet wide, the columnar habit of Feather Reed Grass makes a great plant for back of the border or an accent plant, screen, or living wall. Once the cold of fall and winter arrives, the foliage turns from dark green to tawny brown. Give them a try. You won’t regret it! Both plants are available for purchase at Out in the Garden Nursery.

Reblooming

We added the miniature dwarf, standard dwarf and intermediate bearded types which start around the beginning of April. The earliest ones are about 4 inches tall. Then there is a progression of sizes, through time, up to the TB irises which in our area usually bloom the last two weeks of May. Following the TB's during the month of June, there are Spuria irises (early June), Japanese irises (the rest of June) and finally Louisiana irises (early June on into July.)

About ten years ago, we discovered a plant characteristic that seemed unique to areas under the influence of our west coast"coastal marine climate" cool off and bloom later in the fall. A few varieties begin in August and continue straight through until they are frozen off in December! In our catalog and on our website, we try to indicate which varieties rebloom reliably by inserting a capitol 'R'. Varieties that rebloom for us only occasionally will be marked with a small "r". Our iris breeding program now focuses on filling the gaps in the Rebloom phenomenon. We want irises in bloom from earliest spring until latest fall.

Our garden is open to visitors during daylight hours during bloom season. The orchid greenhouse is open by appointment.

Welcome to Sebright Gardens. We carry several hundred varieties of hostas. We have 73 additions to our 2010 catalog which includes one new 2010 Sebright Gardens introduction; Emerald City Chick. Returning customers to the nursery will find many new enhancements to make shopping easier. Whatever has been asked for in the past, we are striving to make it so. Also, we have added more Hardy Fern varieties to choose from with a culmination of approximately 75 varieties of Hardy Ferns this spring. We have four Sebright Gardens introductions; Gentle Giant, which is a vigorous & stunning, upright, giant blue hosta that is quite sun tolerant for a blue & for a hosta for that matter & the last two years, our display clump of Gentle Giant stood just shy of 4 feet Tall! Tears of Joy, a sport of Tiny Tears is an ever so pretty & vigorous miniature hosta with wavy, twisted green leaves making it a perfect hosta for a rock garden. Emerald City Chick, a sport of Dixie Chickadee that is small yet vigorous with attractive glossy green foliage. Then Sweet Thing, a sport of So Sweet that has a unique, narrow penciled margin surrounding a shiny green center which is a favorite fragrant hosta for our garden visitors. The 19th Annual Clark Public Utilities Home & Garden Idea Fair will be held April 23, 24, and 25, 2010 at the Clark County Event Center, located at 17402 NE Delfel Road in Ridgefield, Washington, just nine miles north of the I-5 bridge at exit 9.

The hours for the 2010 show are:

Friday, April 23: 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Saturday, April 24: 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Sunday, April 25: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

We are pleased to provide this outstanding event for our customer-owners as a way to share important information about utility programs and services that benefit you. But even more, this event provides the perfect opportunity for local businesses and organizations to promote their home and garden related products and services to the communities they serve.

The fair features hundreds of ideas on how to make your home, yard and garden a more beautiful, energy-efficient and environmentally friendly place. Here's the newspaper insert from last year's show with even more information.

It‘s a fun filled event, with activities for the entire family. Admission is FREE and venue parking is $5. Save on parking and take the free shuttle bus to the fairgrounds.

We encourage canned food donations for local food banks or cash donations to Operation Warm Heart, but visitors don’t have to spend another dime at the fair unless they want to.

Native Plant Seminars / Plant Walk on Summer Saturdays for 2009 (with more to come in the late fall). Seminars take place from 9:45 am until 12:30 pm in the Bill deWeese Classroom at the lovely Hoyt Arboretum in Portland. For $25 you get two informative PowerPoint slide shows, about an hour each, followed by a little plant walk (to look at natives, and some weeds, too) around the Hoyt Visitor's Center. Coffee, tea and snacks are provided. Copies of the encyclopedia and selected native plants will also be available for sale. Kali Robson has been attracted to plants since childhood, when she first gardened with her father. During a high school geology class field trip to Death Valley she begged the teacher to allow her to collect plants instead of rocks. He agreed, as long as she included information on the soils they were growing in as part of her class project.

After high school she worked in a wholesale nursery, did some landscape maintenance, and worked other odd jobs, but her attraction to plants kept nagging. Finally — deciding she had to know more about the secret lives of plants — she joined her local community college as a botany major. A few years later she transferred to the Botany Department at the University of California at Davis where she received her bachelor's degree. She completed graduate degrees studying at the University of British Columbia and the University of Nebraska.

In addition to studying rare plants, and plants of importance to the Columbia Basin tribes, she taught taxonomy for several years on both sides of the Cascades as adjunct faculty with Washington State University. Her deepest interests involve the philosophy of science, evolutionary theory, and complexity and emergence, and she wrote monthly columns on gardening with northwest natives and related topics for The Columbian in Vancouver, Washington.

In her spare time Robson enjoys hiking, botanizing, vegetable gardening, and sampling the wonderful Pacific Northwest microbrews.
